Weekends are precious. They offer a break from the weekday rush and a chance to recharge. But often, chores pile up and eat into that free time.
I've found ways to keep on top of chores without losing the joy of the weekend. It’s about balance, smart planning, and using the right tools.
Let me share how I make the most of my weekends while still ticking off the chores that matter.
Plan Smart to Save Time and Stress
The first step is planning. Without a plan, chores can feel endless and overwhelming.
Start by listing what needs doing and when. This will help you see what’s urgent and what can wait.
Then break chores into small, manageable tasks. For example, instead of cleaning the whole house in one go, focus on one room or one type of chore each day. This way, chores don’t take over the weekend.
Also, set realistic goals. Trying to do everything at once only leads to burnout. Pick a few key chores and leave the rest for later.
Use Technology To Your Advantage
One of the biggest weekend chores is meal planning and grocery shopping. It’s easy to waste time and food when you don’t know what’s in your pantry or what to cook.
Before, it took me about an hour or two to think and argue about what we wanted to cook for the coming week. Just the mental load of it was already taxing! Then, it took another two hours to create and finalise our grocery list. This included looking for recipes, listing down ingredients, and checking our pantry and cupboards for what we already had.
Once all of that was done, we could finally start driving to the grocery store. Navigating through each aisle while looking intently at our shopping list often felt overwhelming.
By the time we were done, half the day was already gone. That’s a quarter of the precious weekend lost!
Now, I use an app like Shelve to automate all this. Shelve helps me organise my pantry, plan meals, and reduce food waste. It sends reminders about expiry dates and suggests recipes based on what’s already in my fridge and cupboard.
This saves me trips to the supermarket and stops me from buying things I don’t need. It also means I spend less time wondering what to cook. In just under two minutes, it gives me suggestions on what to eat and generates a shopping list automatically. With Shelve, I can plan meals quickly and get back to enjoying my weekend.

An organised pantry makes meal prep faster and reduces food waste.
Use Efficient Cleaning Tools
Good tools make chores easier and faster. I’ve found that investing in a few quality cleaning products pays off.
For example, a cordless vacuum cleaner saves time because I don’t have to plug and unplug it while moving from room to room. Microfibre cloths clean surfaces quickly without needing harsh chemicals.
Choosing the right tools means chores take less time and effort, leaving more room for weekend fun.
Batch Tasks to Free Up More Time
Batching means grouping similar chores together. Instead of doing laundry, cleaning, and shopping all at once, I set specific times for each.
For example, I do all laundry loads back to back. Then I move on to cleaning surfaces and floors. Finally, I do grocery shopping or meal prep.
This approach reduces the mental load of switching between tasks and helps me finish chores faster.
Keep a Chore Calendar Visible
I use a simple calendar to track chores. It’s on the fridge where everyone can see it. This keeps chores visible and reminds me what needs doing.
The calendar includes daily, weekly, and monthly chores. For example, daily might be washing dishes, weekly could be vacuuming, and monthly might be cleaning windows.
Having a clear schedule stops chores from piling up and makes it easier to plan free time.
Take Breaks and Reward Yourself
It’s important to rest. I schedule breaks between chores to recharge. Even a short walk or a cup of tea helps me stay fresh.
I also reward myself after finishing chores. It could be watching a favourite show, reading a book, or spending time outside.
This keeps me motivated and makes chores feel less like a burden.
